INTRCPT

A first-person storm-chasing game

Storm chasing, from the driver's seat.

INTRCPT is a first-person storm-chasing game in development for Steam. You read the forecast, pick a place to start, and drive out to meet the storms that form.

An idealised spring sounding on a skew-T diagram Illustration drawn for this page, not game output and not a real observation. Temperature and dewpoint profiles of a capped spring day: a moist layer near the ground under a warm inversion, dry air and a steep lapse rate above, and a surface parcel that is held down by the cap and then rises freely through a large region of instability to near 200 hPa. Winds veer and strengthen with height. 1000850700500300200-30-20-10010203040hPa°CcapCAPEparcelTTd

The game

Every chase starts with the forecast.

  • First person

You watch the sky from the road, on foot or from behind the wheel.

  • Weather that isn't scripted

Each day's storms grow out of that day's conditions: the fronts, the moisture, the wind, and whatever last night's storms left behind. Two days can look the same on the maps and still play out differently.

  • Forecasting matters

You can study the setup the night before and again that morning. Where you decide to start makes a big difference.

  • Every storm is different

Supercells, squall lines and clusters change from one chase to the next. You won't see the same storm twice.

How it's made

We check our storms against real ones.

  • Compared with real data

We compare our storms with radar, weather balloon soundings, damage surveys and chasers' videos.

  • Made by the game

Real data is only used for testing. The storms you chase are created by the game itself.

Status

Early development.

What works so far: walking around, driving, a large open world and a procedural sky. The storm system is what we're building now.

No screenshots yet. We'll share some once the game looks the way we want it to.

Tools

Pipelines for making games like this one.

To make INTRCPT we're building our own production pipelines for art, engineering, effects and testing. They follow the way large studios work, and they're automated wherever we can manage it.

Once the game is out, we plan to release those pipelines so independent developers can take a game from an idea to a full AAA-quality release.
